Creating Natural forms

How to create textured & naturally dyed quilts

Live & Online with Samantha Boot

Take time to slow down and embrace the gentle rhythms of working with your hands, whilst creating a unique piece of stitched art. Inspired by the natural forms of flower heads and corals, and using your own naturally dyed fabrics, Samantha Boot will guide you through two of her favourite fabric manipulation techniques, before giving clear instructions on how to quilt and finish your work. All by hand, this class will encourage you to work intuitively with what you have, honouring and celebrating the nuances of natural dyes.

All sessions are recorded and made available for a week following the course.

2 HOUR SESSION OVERVIEW

Students will learn why and how to use two, simple fabric manipulation techniques, and how to combine them to create a textured, quilted art piece. A theme of this workshop will be to encourage students to mindfully slow down, lean into the process and create without expectation of an outcome, using what they have. All abilities welcome.

For a 20cm sq finished piece, it is recommended to have:

  • Selection of naturally dyed fabrics, lace and ribbons (cottons, linens, silks, wools);

  • Basic hand sewing kit (needles, sewing thread, straight pins, safety pins, scissors, thimble)

  • A slightly thicker thread for hand quilting. I enjoy using a Crochet cotton, size 60 or a Perle cotton, size 8;

  • Top fabric (cotton, linen), approx 20cm sq;

  • Batting/wadding (off-cut of wool blanket or old jumper would be a good alternative to commercial batting), approx 22cm sq;

  • Backing fabric (cotton or linen) approx 24cm sq.

Please Note: You do not have to use commercial sewing fabric or batting for your quilts.

Consider what you have already - old clothes, bedding, blankets or table linen in natural fibres are all good options.

Threads and fabrics can often be sourced second hand from charity/goodwill/thrift shops, rather than buying new.

Essential Notes: Tutor to provide a simple recipe for dyeing with tea, plus further reading pertaining to natural dye processes, as printable pdf.

Samantha Boot

Samantha Boot is a contemporary Artist Maker, working by hand with thread and cloth. Drawn to the ancient lineage and domesticity of these materials, she creates quiet, thoughtful works inspired by the narrative of place and memory using a reductive colour palette, often with handmade, natural dyes, inks and paints. A thoughtful lexicon of hand stitches imbues each piece with layered meaning, which reaches beyond the aesthetic, and grounds the work in the slow, meditative processes involved in their creation.

Samantha Boot gained a BA (Hons) Textiles from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, Farnham (1997). Since returning to textiles in 2020, she was placed 3rd for Handwork at QuiltCon Phoenix, USA (2022), was awarded DYCP Funding from Arts Council England (2022) and has spoken about, exhibited and sold work, both nationally and internationally.
